If we are to hold our elected officials and candidates accountable at election time, it is our responsibility to communicate with them now to let them know that we demand accountability and change.
The Texas Department of Insurance is up for what is called “Sunset Review” this year for the first time in 18 years. That means that a reform bill must pass the legislature this year or the whole licensing and regulatory system in existence turns into a pumpkin. This is a once in a generation opportunity for meaningful reform.
This comes at a time when we have seen nationally what happens when greed is allowed to run rampant on Wall Street and in the insurance industry. The problems with insurance giant AIG have shined a spotlight on the problems of excessive compensation, complete deregulation and no oversight of complex financial and investment schemes.
Now it is our responsibility in Texas – one of the largest insurance markets in the nation – to demand a new system of accountability and become a model for the rest of the nation. The solutions are clear.
In order for our elected officials to be held accountable in the next election, they must hear for you now and must be responsive – or not.
